Apple’s coveted iPad may face serious competition, with Google unveiling its first ever tablet device, the Nexus 7, during the company's I/O Developers Conference in San Francisco.

In case you thought Google had run out of ideas (remember Google Plus? No?), in comes the Nexus. The thin slab of beauty, weighing in at 340 grams, will boast a seven-inch HD display and utilize the latest 4.1 version of Google’s popular Android platform, called Jelly Bean.

Other than a much swifter operating system, its other much-hyped specs include a 1.2-megapixel front camera, speedy Tegra 3 processor and an eight-hour battery life.

While the iPad seems like an obvious foe when any new tablet arrives, tech heads are pitting the Nexus against Amazon's Kindle Fire, since they’re in the same price range.

Starting at $199, the Nexus 7 is available for pre-order here.
